Introduction
Shinty from the Gaelic Sinteag means the bounding game, which is descriptive of the great sweeping nature of the play. It has one of the very longest lineage's of any of the world's sporting dating back 2000 years to the legendary Celtic heroes in their courtly recreation.
Shinty or Camanachd from camen (a curved stick) developed its own special identity with the growth of the nation of Scots in the sixth century.
Modern day shinty is still indigenous to Scotland but there are small pockets of exiles keeping up traditions in Canada, New Zealand and France to name a few.
The games retains a strong community identity in the heartland's of the West Highlands of Scotland with the game breeding players with essential characteristics such as speed, strength, skill steadfastness and shared responsibility.
