The seventh annual 5 Latha (5 Days) was held this year at the Gearrannan Blackhouses, Isle of Lewis, between 2-7 April 2018.
This year 12 Gaelic speaking participants of high school age had the opportunity to spend five days in a community where Gaelic is used naturally and in which crofting, fishing and the Harris Tweed industry play an important part in the lives of its residents.
Each day the participant had the opportunity to gain a hands-on experience of these traditional works, spending time with experienced individuals who showed them what is involved in their daily routines from lambing, looking after cattle, peat cutting to producing Harris Tweed. The participants also had the opportunity to learn some traditional recipes through practical cookery sessions using locally sourced ingredients.
Though a musical ability is not essential to attend 5 Latha, music and song workshops were held throughout the week delivered by leading Gaelic musicians including; Ian Smith (Trailwest), Ellen MacDonald (Dàimh) and Norrie MacIver (Skipinnish)
5 Latha 2019 will be held between 8-13 April.
