An islands’ tour of ‘Hùb Hàb: Rannan an Rathaid Mhòir’ (Hùb Hàb: Road Rhymes), a new Gaelic language play about road safety, began today (Monday 13th May) at Sgoil Thiriodh, Tiree. The nine-day tour will also visit Gaelic medium primary schools and nurseries in Mull and the Western Isles.
During the play, Hùb and Hàb learn about various aspects of road safety through Gaelic song and gain useful advice from a lollipop man called Seonaidh Sàbhailte. This is the third time that Anna MacDonald (Hùb) and Catriona Nicolson (Hàb) have worked together on Fèisgoil’s Hùb Hàb project. Glasgow-based Anna is originally from Tiree and is an accomplished musician and artist. Catriona, originally from Inverness, now lives in Edinburgh and has acted in a number of Fèisean nan Gàidheal’s theatre productions for schools, including the Gaelic pantomime Marsaili agus a’ Bhleideag Airgid (Marsaili and the Silver Snowflake). The play showcases the singing talents of both performers.
‘Rannan an Rathaid Mhòir’ was written and directed by Fèisean nan Gàidheal’s Drama Officer, Angus Macleod, with musical direction provided by Eilidh Mackenzie, Fèisgoil Manager. Together they developed original songs and music for the play. The eye-catching road safety-themed costumes were designed and produced by Laura Cowie.
The play was initially toured in March for schools and nurseries in Central Scotland, Argyll and Perthshire. A final tour for the Highland Council region and Aberdeen is planned for September.
The Hùb Hàb early years years theatre-in-education project is delivered through Fèisean nan Gàidheal’s Fèisgoil education service and made possible by funding received from Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Creative Scotland and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
The tour builds on the success of ‘Hùb Hàb: Seirm na Sìde’ last year, ‘Hùb Hàb: Cumaidhean Ceòlmhor’ (Musical Shapes) the previous year and ‘Hùb Hàb air Ghleus’ (Hùb Hàb In Tune) in 2016.
