20 February 2016
There is still time to apply for Fèisean nan Gàidheal’s tutor training course which is running on Saturday 20th February at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. Starting at 10am, the course will run until 5pm, with established tutors talking about the basic and essential skills needed to be a tutor at a Fèis.
Mhairi Hall – who has been involved with the Fèis movement for years and has vast teaching experience – will be giving advice on skills such as preparing for a Fèis, dealing with different levels in one class, keeping a class under control and choosing songs and tunes which will be suitable for young children to learn. This will all give the participants an idea of what to expect from teaching at a Fèis.
Ruairidh Graham, who has been involved with the running of Fèis an Earraich for a considerable amount of time, will be running a short session on Gaelic games which will be a lot of fun and will come in very useful. Children at Fèisean tend to become restless after learning for a set amount of time and these games will give tutors ideas on how to keep the children interested in learning. Ruairidh will also be teaching those who are learning Gaelic a number of phrases and words which will be put into use when teaching at a Fèis. Màiri Sìne Campbell will be on hand to deliver a similar session geared towards the more fluent participants of the course.
Shona Macmillan from Fèisean nan Gàidheal will lead the last session of the day which will be about opportunities with Fèisean across Scotland, available resources to find songs and tunes and Arts Awards, which tutors can work towards over the course of a week of teaching at a Fèis.
At 7.30pm on Saturday night, a cèilidh will be held and everyone is welcome to come along with their instruments for a music session. Meals and accommodation will be provided at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on Friday and/or Saturday.
