With support from Creative Scotland and other funders, Fèisean nan Gàidheal have recently announced ‘Treòir’ a new and exciting project for 2021 and Fèis Fhoirt are delighted to be a part of it. Treòir, a Gaelic word meaning “Guide; Direction; Energy”, will allow Fèisean to host a musician-in-residence who will be employed flexibly to undertake a range of tuition opportunities, while developing their own skills and mentoring less experienced local tutors.

Prìomh Gnìomhan | Main Responsibilities and Tasks

Teaching

The musician in residence will be expected to establish a new programme of weekly classes which should compliment and build on the current provision of Fèis Fhoirt. It is expected that this will equate to around 4 hours of teaching per week for the duration of the residency.

Mentoring

As part of the Treòir project, the musician in residence will work with an emerging tutor(s), giving them some training, sharing knowledge and experience to allow them to develop their skills and become more confident in their teaching. These mentored tutors will go on to deliver classes and workshops some of which will be aimed at children at early years level.

Resource Development

During the residency, the musician in residence will research and collect local materials which should include tunes and Gaelic songs. From this it is hoped that a Fèis resource will be created that can be used by current and future Fèis participants.

Training

Fèisean nan Gàidheal will provide induction sessions and relevant training to successful candidates at the beginning of residencies. There will be ongoing training throughout the duration of the Treòir project and there will also be an opportunity for all musicians in residence to come together and share their experiences.

Sgilean pearsanta riatanach is feumail | Essential and desirable skills:

  • Extensive teaching experience in their discipline(s)
  • An in-depth knowledge of Scottish traditional music and/or Gaelic song
  • Experience of working with young people from a variety of different backgrounds
  • The ability to form positive working relationship with the Fèis committee, class participants, mentoredtutors and Fèisean nan Gàidheal
  • Experience of using online teaching platforms, such as Zoom/Skype/Google Meet
  • The ability to work independently and to meet deadlines
  • Fluency in Gaelic is desirable although training will be provided to the successful candidate should thisbe required
  • The successful candidate will be required to adopt a flexible approach to working hours (for example,some work may take place in the evenings and at weekends)

The successful candidate will be required to undergo PVG disclosure check through Fèisean nan Gàidheal. All applicants will be required to send us their CV as well as completing an application form.

They will have the opportunity to learn from the experienced musician in residence before going on to deliver a series of tuition opportunities for some of our younger participants.
